WDT Driver Academies
Western Dairy Transport has opened three driver academies to serve the transportation industry better. Those who attend and graduate from their academies are among the best trained in the nation, according to the company. Applicants must undergo a stringent screening process.
WDT has two driver academies in Texas and one in Missouri.
Bryan Academy
WDT’s Bryan Academy was opened in partnership with Texas A&M University System RELLIS Campus, which is located in Bryan, Texas. The academy educates employees on smooth-bore tanker operations to serve the growing dairy industry in Texas.
Abernathy Academy
Located just north of Lubbock in Abernathy, Texas, this is WDT’s second training academy. It has been in operation since 2014 and is located on the former local airport. The old runways allow drivers to practice their basic skills and to learn new skills.
Cabool Academy
The Cabool Academy is the company’s original academy, which has been in operation for more than 20 years. Here, they offer training for smooth bore tanker and dry van operations. Two certified drivers are on staff as well as support personnel.
Driver Intern Program
Those who lack the experience and training to get a CDL can attend WDT’s driver intern program, which will help attendees become familiar with what a driving position entails.
Interns who complete the program, receive recommendations from their previous supervisors and reach age 21 can continue to the RCTA driver training school. From here, they can attend a 6-week entry-level driver program to obtain their CDL A with tanker endorsement.
After obtaining their CDL A with tanker endorsement, interns can move into the driver apprentice role. A driver apprentice must complete 10,000 training miles with a driver trainer before moving into a journeyman role. Journeyman drivers may only operate in rural farm routes. Drivers are evaluated every 30 days and receive an additional 3,000-6,000 training miles. After one year of working as a journeyman, drivers can transition to a position as a WDT driver.
